It is thought that the first diggers were actually powered by steam and that they were being used as early as the late 1700s and early 1800s in some form or other. Early examples here include the Grimshaw Steam Excavator and the Otis Steam Shovel. Developments here saw changes in the ways that these machines worked with inventions such as slew shovels.

Steam shovels played a major role in building various things including the Panama Canal which used over 100 steam shovels in its construction. For many years the steam shovel and the other types of shovels that followed them were the most popular way of excavating.

Soon after this these machines were further developed by the invention of hydraulic excavators and by the late 1800s excavators powered by electric motors were brought to market. Various new types of excavator followed including drag line, backhoe, bucket wheel, long reach, skid loader and suction excavators.

When Diggers Go Crazy

Two men have admitted stealing diggers from a building site and causing up to £6,000 of damage as they raced them through an area of Glasgow.

Kevin Barr, 21, and Garry Rooney, 18, stole the vehicles from Cruden Building Site in Drumchapel in December 2009.

They were caught by police drinking inside the diggers after destroying a church wall and several street lights.

At Glasgow Sheriff Court, sentence on Barr and Rooney was deferred and both were remanded in custody.

The pair, who are being held in Polmont Young Offenders Institution, also admitted driving dangerously and striking street lights, a fence, a wall and an electricity box and stealing boots and jackets from a portable cabin at the site.

We shouldn’t find this story amusing, but with the maximum speed of a digger around 4-5km per hour, we can’t imagine them exactly speeding around the streets of Glasgow!

We don’t do things by halves at TopDiggers.com, diggers, excavators, JCBs…health and safety is also a big priority. That’s why Matt in the office takes it upon himself to make sure he’s well covered if a stray lever arch file falls on his head, or a leaky biro bursts on his clothes…

We had a booking for diggers for hire last week. It was a man in Blackpool who needed to shift a few tonnes of soil from one side of the yard to another going through a narrow-ish passage on the way through. We advised him to get a mini digger which is great for those jobs where access is a little tighter than usual.
He got the job doen in half the time and we collected it that afternoon. He said it was the easiest bit of work he’d done in a while!
